( The Dotted Dress )

“My paternal grandmother and I loved going through her jewellery, the LP collection, the pantry in the kitchen, the shoe collection hanging on the wall and not to mention her magic wardrobe.”

She was the biggest kid I have ever known and a sophisticated lady at the same time. The summers of my childhood were thus full of singing, dress-ups, telling each other secrets and laughing about things that only the two of us would understand. My best friend for nine years.

She sewed this dress by hand and wore it on warm summer days. I remember putting it on and wearing it around the house, drowning in the abundance of red, dotted fabric and stomping around in her high heels, feeling absolutely fabulous. I guess it would take a few more years for it to actually fit me.

We put aside some clothes and other belongings when she passed away. While I have heaps of items and memories to remind me of her by, I find this dress to be the dearest piece of clothing I own.

Even looking at it in the closet makes me smile, and knowing that she crafted it herself makes me adore it even more. Somehow I know she’d be delighted to know that I still wear it.
