( The Little Red Jacket )

“This red leather jacket is my life, it’s me. ‘Oh my, Nikki! You STILL have that red leather jacket!’ is something I hear often from people I haven’t seen in a while. Yes, I still have it, I still wear it, even though it’s pretty worn out by now… I just still love it! The red leather jacket became sort of my signature.”

The jacket goes back to the guilder (the old Dutch currency, before the Euro) era. I bought it in a vintage store in Groningen, in the North of The Netherlands, and it must have been the year 2000, perhaps 2001. I remember I was haggling over the price. It’s actually a children’s jacket and I was convinced no one would fit it like me, so the guy from the shop should give me a good deal. It did fit me at the time – now I can’t zip it up anymore, blame it on the years…

This photo was taken in 2005(-ish), at an exhibition opening in an Amsterdam art gallery. The jacket has been around. We’ve shared so many amazingly good times together. I don’t think I could ever get rid of my red leather jacket. It was – and still is – always a winner. Cheers to that.
