( The Multi-Generation Sweater )

“The story of my blue knitted sweater begins in 1975. When my mother was 17 years old, my grandmother knitted her a blue sweater with a flower pattern. It was her favourite garment. She was taking it with her on every school trip and vacation.”

When my mother grew out of it, instead of throwing it out, she kept it in her wardrobe. The sweater lay there for years, neatly folded on a shelf and easy to see for my sister and me.

And so it happened, that my sister started to like it. When she was 17 years old, just like my mother when she first wore that sweater, my sister started wearing it. I was always jealous when she did. After some years, when it was too small for her, finally my sister passed it on to me.

I loved it and wore it throughout my adolescence, and unlike my sister I did not outgrow it – it still suits me today. And although 39 years have passed, the sweater still looks like my grandmother knitted it only a few years ago. This is its story so far. I hope that one day I will have children of my own to pass it on to, to make the story of the blue knitted sweater even longer.
